[Cockroaches - Blattodea. An example for introduction and establishment of insects in Europe]
Mitteilungen der deutschen Gesellschaft für allgemeine und angewandte Entomologie 14, 93-100
Abstract: Cockroaches (Class: Insecta, Order: Blattodea) are known around human premises for thousands of years. Some species followed man from the tropical and subtropical areas to the north and live in the human environment since people started to settle. Some species such as Blattella germanica (LINNAEUS), Blatta orientalis (LINNAEUS), and Periplaneta americana (LINNAEUS), have become important household pests worldwide. Other species are introduced sporadically to Europe with plants and vegetables and are known to cause damage to plants and their fruits in greenhouses (e.g. Pycnoscelus surinamensis (LINNAEUS), and Periplaneta australasiae (FABRICIUS)). Changes in the lifestyle of people since the last 50 years which favourite introduction and establisment of cockroaches are described, particularly those which are responsible for constantly warm temperature conditions. Extensive food production areas and intensive world trade are also important entrances for introduction and establishment of cockroach species from warmer countries to Europe. Origin, possible ways of introduction and establishment of different primarily domicilary cockroach species are discussed.
